How to Prevent Clogged Drains: A Complete Guide

Clogged drains are one of the most common service calls I get in Chula Vista — and the frustrating thing is, most of them are completely preventable. After 20 years of snaking drains throughout San Diego County, I have seen patterns. Here is what actually causes clogs and how to avoid them.

What Actually Causes Most Clogs

I am going to tell you something that might surprise you: the cause of 90% of drain clogs I clear falls into one of these five categories:

  • Hair — The number one cause of bathroom drain clogs, bar none
  • Grease and cooking oils — The number one cause of kitchen drain clogs
  • Food particles — Even with a garbage disposal, certain foods should never go down the drain
  • Soap scum buildup — Combines with hair and minerals to create stubborn blockages
  • Things that should not be flushed — Wipes, cotton balls, dental floss, and other items

Notice what is not on that list: normal use of your plumbing. If you are dealing with frequent clogs despite being careful, there may be a deeper issue like tree root intrusion or pipe damage that needs professional attention.

Kitchen Drain: The Grease Problem

I cannot stress this enough: grease is the enemy of your kitchen drain. When you pour hot grease or oil down the drain, it feels like liquid — but it solidifies as it cools in your pipes. Over time, this creates a sticky coating that catches food particles and eventually blocks the pipe entirely.

Here is what I tell every Chula Vista homeowner:

  • Pour cooking grease into a container (old cans work great) and throw it in the trash once it solidifies
  • Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing
  • Run hot water for 15–30 seconds after using the sink to flush any residual oils

Your Garbage Disposal Is Not a Trash Can

Even the best garbage disposal cannot handle everything. These items should never go down your disposal:

  • Coffee grounds — They accumulate in pipes like wet sand
  • Eggshells — The membrane can wrap around the blades, and the shells create grainy buildup
  • Pasta and rice — They continue to expand with water
  • Fibrous vegetables — Celery, asparagus, and artichokes can wrap around blades
  • Bones and fruit pits — They can damage the disposal and do not break down

When you do use the disposal, always run cold water before, during, and for 15 seconds after to help flush waste through the system.

Bathroom Drains: The Hair Problem

Hair is the single biggest cause of bathroom drain clogs. The solution is simple but requires consistency:

Install Drain Screens

A $5 mesh drain screen from any hardware store can prevent 90% of bathroom drain clogs. Place one in every shower and bathtub drain. Clean them after each shower — it takes 5 seconds. This one habit alone will save you from most bathroom drain issues.

What Should Never Be Flushed

Only human waste and toilet paper should go in the toilet. Despite what the packaging says, never flush:

  • Flushable wipes — They do not break down like toilet paper. I have pulled these out of clogged main lines hundreds of times
  • Cotton balls and swabs
  • Dental floss (it is not biodegradable and catches other debris)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Paper towels (they are designed not to break down)

My Monthly Maintenance Tip

Once a month, pour a pot of boiling water down each drain. This helps dissolve soap scum and minor grease buildup before it becomes a problem. For an extra boost, pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of white vinegar, wait 15 minutes, then flush with the boiling water. It is safe, cheap, and effective.

Simple Monthly Routine

Prevention takes just a few minutes each month. Here is what I recommend:

  1. Clean all drain stoppers and screens — Remove accumulated hair and debris
  2. Flush with hot water — Run very hot water for 2–3 minutes in each drain
  3. Check for slow drains — A slow drain today is a clogged drain next month
  4. Clean your garbage disposal — Grind ice cubes and citrus peels to clean the blades and freshen the smell

When to Call a Professional

Some clogs are beyond what homeowners should tackle. Call a professional if:

  • Multiple drains are slow or clogged at the same time (main line issue)
  • You hear gurgling sounds from your drains
  • Water backs up in unexpected places (like the bathtub when you flush)
  • You smell sewage odors
  • Store-bought drain cleaners are not working

Speaking of drain cleaners, I generally advise against chemical drain cleaners. They can damage your pipes over time, especially older pipes, and often just push the clog further down rather than removing it. Professional drain cleaning with a snake or hydro-jetting is much more effective and safer for your plumbing system.

What Professional Drain Cleaning Looks Like

When you call Hydro Hero for drain cleaning, here is what we do:

  1. Diagnose the problem — Is it a simple clog or something deeper?
  2. Use a camera inspection if needed to see exactly what we are dealing with
  3. Clear the clog with professional equipment — either a drain snake for minor clogs or hydro-jetting for severe buildup
  4. Test the drain to ensure proper flow
  5. Give you honest recommendations for preventing future issues based on what we found
